Abstract
The study was conducted to answer the following question: (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang able to understand the text they read? (2) What is the student’s level of ability in reading? The study was done for the following objectives: (1) To find out and to know whether the eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang are able to understand the text they read. (2) To find out and to know the student’s level of ability in understanding readingtext. The research method used in this study was normative survey method. The total respondents were 22 students. The instrument used in gathering the needed data was a test. The test consisted of 20 items of multiple choice tests. The result of the study shows that (a) the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang are able to understand the text they read. (b) Their ability level is “fairly good” with the total score (75.90%). Based on the result of the study, the writer suggests in reading comprehension, (1) For the English Teacher, in order to improve the students’ more explanations about descriptive text, and giving more exercises in form of multiple choice test. (2) For the students ability is good thus the students should pay more attention and do more the exercises about descriptive text. The practice can be done in the classroom or at home by doing homework so their level of ability can be better.
