Abstract
This research, titled An Analysis of Students' Behavior in Using English in the Classroom at SMK Negeri 1 Kupang in 2024. The study is going to answer the following questions: 1) What are the factor that effect students' behaviour to use English at SMK Negeri 1 Kupang? 2) How do the students solve the problems encountered in EFL class at SMK Negeri 1 Kupang? The study intends to analyze the factors that influence the English language use of vocational students and how they solve problems encountered in learning English. Data were collected from two classes of tenth-grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Kupang in 2024, where 56 students were selected as the sample of this study. They were from two study program namely Tourism and Marketing program. A descriptive qualitative methodology was employed, utilizing observations and open-ended questionnaires for data collection. Observations aimed to identify student behavior during English lessons, while questionnaires were administered after class to understand how students resolve issues. The observation results indicated two primary factors influencing students' behavior in using English: Internal and External factors. Internal factors include motivation, which comprises positive task orientation, ego involvement, the need to achieve, high aspiration, goal orientation, perseverance, and ambiguity tolerance towards learners. Another internal factor is attention, which includes looking at the teacher, looking at other students who are speaking in front of the class, writing down the answer, and volunteering to answer questions or give opinions. Additionally, the author also found external factors, namely the physical environment and social environment. The physical environment is related to students' personality, character, and outlook, or ways of dressing. Meanwhile, the social environment includes teaching methods, curriculum, teacher-student interaction, student-student interaction, school rules, and learning facilities. The results of the questionnaire revealed that many students have found various ways to overcome these problems or challenges, such as discussing and sharing difficulties in understanding the material or topic, as well as doing some research. These findings demonstrate the importance of fostering a supportive and interactive classroom environment where students feel comfortable seeking and providing help to their peers. This study suggests that English teachers always strengthen students' motivation and attention as well as maximize the surrounding environment such as creating new activities inside and outside the classroom so that students can communicate and use English in a comfortable and fun environment. This study also recommends to further researchers, to continue this research by comparing the behavior of students from both study programs.
