Abstract

This study examines the practice of interpersonal communication accommodation among students of different ethnicities living in Kos Rania 42, Jalan Sanjuan 1. As a place to live with diverse cultural backgrounds, Rania's boarding house is a place where interaction is very important and requires good communication skills to achieve harmony in interpersonal relationships. The study focuses on how students change the way they communicate to address ethnic differences, as well as the factors that impact the effectiveness of these accommodations. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, documentation studies, and observations. This research uses Howard Giles' theory of communication accommodation, which includes three stages of adaptation, namely convergence, divergence, and excessive accommodation. The findings of the study show that convergence practices such as: the use of more inclusive language and the adjustment of dominant tone of speech are carried out to strengthen relationships and create a sense of mutual respect. On the other hand, divergence arises in certain situations to maintain ethnic identity or affirm cultural differences. Meanwhile, Excessive Accommodation is excessive behavior in imitating and responding. Factors such as perception of diversity, tolerance level, and previous experience in a multicultural environment influence the pattern of accommodation applied. This study emphasizes the significance of interpersonal communication accommodation in creating harmony in an ethnically diverse environment. The results of this study also provide an understanding of how students can better manage diversity, as well as enrich academic discussions about intercultural interaction in the world of higher education. Thus, communication accommodation serves as an important strategy in building social cohesion in the midst of ethnic differences.
