Thesis of Language and Art Department. English Study Program. Advisor I Dr.DamianusTalok, MA, and advisor II Drs. KlemensAtaburan, M.Hum The problems of this study are: (1) Are the eighth-grade students of SMPK Sint Aloysius Niki-Niki in the School Year 2018/2019 able to use diary writing improve recount text writing ability?, (2) What is the ability level to improve recount text writing ability of the eighth-grade students of SMPK Sint Aloysius Niki-Niki in the School Year 2018/2019?. Therefore the objectives of this study are: (1) To find out the eighth-gradestudents in the School Year 2018/2019 able to write recount text by using diary writing, (2) To find out the level of ability of the eighth-grade students of SMPK Sint Aloysius Niki-Niki in the School Year 2018/2019. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPK Sint Aloysius Niki-Niki in the School Year 2018/2019. In order to solve this problem the writer use descriptive method. This method was use because the aim of the study was to describe the writing ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPK Sint Aloysius Niki-Niki. The subject of the study were the eighth grade students of SMPK Sint Aloysius Niki-Niki class B. The result of the research shows that in general the eighth grade students of SMPK Sint Aloysius Niki-Nikiwere able to write recount text. The level of ability of the eighth grade students of SMPK Sint Aloysius Niki-Niki is Good (13,75). Based on the result of the study, the writer would like to suggest that the English teacher of SMPK Sint Aloysius Niki-Niki should give more attention in teaching grammar especially simple past tense, vocabulary and article. Therefore the English teachers especially those who are teaching English at the same school in which the researcher conducted this study are highly recomended to use diary writing as one of the tool toteach writing recount text to students. If this technique is implemented then teachers are also suggested to let the students write freely without depending on the topic that prepared by the teacher. Enough model of diary is better to help them understand easily; students especially those who involved in this study are suggested to keep on writing by using diary since it can help them gain more knowledge in English; and the writer in the future will become an educator since this study showed positive result then she can consider the technique to be used later in her professional career by making necessary adjustment
