Abstract

It was conducted in order to answer the following questions: (1). What is the ability level of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Kupang in using simple past tense in sentence? (2). What are the difficulties encountered by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Kupang in using simple past tense?. The objectives of the study are as follows : (1) To find out and to know the level abilty the eight grade students SMP Negeri 2 Kupang in school year 2018/2019 in using simple past tense. (2). To find out and to know the difficulties encountered by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Kupang in using simple past tense. The writer used descriptive method. This method is to describe sistematically a situation or area of interest factually and accurately. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Kupang, especially class VIII H. The total number of the students class VIII H was 29 as the sample of this study. In collecting the data, the writer used test. After analysing the data the result of the study shows the following facts. (1) The eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Kupang were able to use simple past tense. The level of ability was classified as FAIRLY GOOD (70.52). Based on the distribution of the students’ ability in simple past tense it can be seen that 7 (24%) students got very good level of ability, 7(24%) students got good level of ability, 8(28%) students got fairly good level of ability, 1(3%) student got bad level of ability and no student got excellent,below average, poor,very poor and very bad level of ability. (2) The difficulties faced by the students were grammar in using simple past tense, lack of vocabularies and incorrect spelling. Seeing at the result of the research, the suggestion might be as follows (1) The teacher of English should take the result of this study as the consideration in planing his/her teaching process so. (2) The students are expected to learn grammar especialy tenses and enhance their vocabularies in order to help them to use English accurately.
