Abstract

This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) What kinds of errors made by the eighth grade students of SMP Katolik St. Aloysius Niki-niki in writing descriptive text? (2) What is the most common error made by the eighth grade students of SMP Katolik St. Aloysius Niki-niki in writing descriptive text? The objectives of this study were: (1) To find the kinds of errors made by the eighth grade students of SMP Katolik St. Aloysius Niki-niki in writing descriptive text. (2) To know the most common error made by the eighth grade students of SMP Katolik St. Aloysius Niki-niki in writing descriptive text. The writer used the descriptive method because it is used to describe the students’ error in writing a text. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Aloysius Niki-niki. There were two classes (class A and B) which consisted of 25 students of class A and 26 students of class B. The writer took 12 students in class A and 12 students in class B randomly to be the respondents of this study. The writer gave them topics to choose. They were: my favorite person, my favorite place, my favorite animal and student’s own topic. The time allocation was 60 minutes. The grammatical errors made by the students were Misformation with the total number 40 (39%), Omission 37 (36%), Misordering 14 (14%) and Addition 11 (11%). The most common error made by the grade students of SMP Katolik St. Aloysius Nikiniki in writing is misformation errors. Based on the result the writer would like to suggest that: The students should learn more grammar especially grammatical aspects related to preposition, article, verbs, nouns, adjectives and adverbs. The teacher should pay more attention to the grammatical aspects when teaching especially in writing descriptive text.
