Abstract

The research titled “Factors Affecting Difficulties in Speaking English for Tenth Grade Students of the Department of Hospitality at SMK Negeri 3 Kupang” aims to address two primary questions: 1) What factors contribute to the difficulty in speaking English among hospitality students at SMKN 3 Kupang? And 2) What solutions can help overcome these difficulties? The study employs qualitative methods, focusing on 15 tenth-grade hospitality students at SMKN 3 Kupang. The research involves 14 interview questions regarding the factors causing difficulties and potential solutions. The findings indicate that most respondents share similar challenges in speaking English, which can be categorized into two main components: linguistic and physical. Linguistic challenges include poor pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary, while physical challenges involve fear of speaking, embarrassment, lack of confidence, fear of being mocked, and lack of motivation due to the perceived difficulty of English. Consequently, students do not actively participate in class. To address these issues, the research suggests creating a comfortable classroom atmosphere with creative teaching methods, incorporating engaging activities and games, and encouraging students to take additional English classes, practice pronunciation, memorize vocabulary, and learn grammar. Additionally, students should utilize resources such as YouTube, Google, TikTok, and English songs to practice speaking.
