Abstract

Political Economy of Land Redistribution, Class Dynamics and the Struggle of East Timorese Refugee in West Timor, Indonesia. The history of East Timor is the history of imperialism and mass slaughter. This incident took place since 1975 when Indonesia invaded East Timor which killed thousands of people, and culminated in 1999, when the East Timorese people were given the option to determine themselves. Since then, thousands of refugees have migrated to West Timor. This paper aims to portrait the life of east Timorese in three settlements: Noelbaki, Oebelo and Naibonat at Kupang district, West Timor. In addition, this paper also tries to explain the social and economic dynamism and the creation of social classes among the east Timorese with their effort to own the land. From the perspective of political economy, this paper argues that state have made proletarianization through social exclusion, facilitated land concentration at the hand of local economic elites, confined East Timorese to access the land. As a result, the state throw East Timorese to fight in capitalistic economy. The failure to own the land makes them to become migrant workers in the neoliberal market, and at the same time, they always struggle to have the right as a citizen.
