Abstract

This study embarks on a basic assumption that a piece of literary work is a communication process. It contains a variety of communication messages packaged with certain techniques.Therefore, the author becomes a communicator (message sender), the reader as an audience, and the literary work is the message to be communicated.Thus, a novel as a literary work providesa space for readers to interpret the text. The present study aims to analyze the storyline and narrative structure ofa novel called Lamafawritten by FiceBataona. Doing this analysis is one of the entrances to understand the novel comprehensively. This is a descriptivequalitative studywhich applies Tzvetan Todorov’s narrative structure analysis framework. The narrative structure proposedis classified into three parts, namely the first balance, disturbance/conflict, and the second balance. Meanwhile, from the result of the analysis, it was found that the narrative structure of the novel is incoherent.This is due to the use of the first person’s point of viewof the main character and it relies on the working power of the writer’s memory. This study concludes that the writing of this novel relies on the power of memory which brings implications for the choice of the main character as the first-person narrator. As a result, the narrative structure of the story is jumping and disorganized.
