Abstract
This study aims to analyze the epistemological barriers of students in solving social arithmetic story problems. Indicators of epistemological barriers in research are barriers to conceptual understanding,barriers to implementing procedures and barriers to operations. This type of research uses a qualitative approach with the Didactic Design Research method. This research was conducted at SMPK Santo Yosep Kupang for the 2021/2022 academic year. The instrument used in this study was a description test, interview and documentation for class VII-D students of SMPK Santo Yosep Kupang. The subjects in this study were 3 students of class VII-D SMPK Santo Yosep Kupang. The instrument used in this study was a description test of three questions and conducting interviews with each subject. Interviews were conducted to find out the students'obstacles in solving mathematical problems on social Arithmetic material. The results of the analysis show that there are epistemological obstacles to the 3 students of SMPK Santo Yosep Kupang, namely errors in determining formulas,theorems or definitions and also errors in calculating values and the steps for solving social arithmetic problems that were ordered were not appropriate. And the results of this study indicate that of the 3 students analyzed only 1 student understands at least 2 of the 3 indicators.
