Abstract

Durability of asphalt mixtures is a crucial factor in determining the quality of road infrastructure. This research aims to analyze the durability value of hot asphalt mixtures, both Hot Rolled Sheet-Wearing Course (HRS-WC) and Asphalt Concrete-Wearing Course (AC-WC), using rounded aggregates with moderate compaction. Laboratory testing methods were conducted to examine durability, focusing on parameters such as Residual Strength Index (IKS), First Durability Index (IDP), and Second Durability Index (IDK). The research findings indicate that the addition of rounded aggregates resulted in a decrease in IKS values for both mixtures. Only the 1-day Residual Strength Index (IKS) with variations of 0% and 10% rounded aggregate mixing met the requirements of the 2018 Road Construction Specification Revision 2. Additionally, AC-WC mixtures exhibited significant variations in IDP at a soaking time of 48 hours with the addition of up to 30% rounded aggregate, producing IDP values exceeding 1%, indicating that AC-WC mixtures under those conditions cannot be considered durable. IDK showed a tendency of decreasing values with increasing soaking time, indicating increased strength loss. In conclusion, the use of rounded aggregates in hot asphalt mixtures affects their durability, emphasizing the importance of careful consideration in material usage to enhance road infrastructure quality.
