Abstract

The base problem in this research is about kind of student mistake and indicator that cannot get by the students in solving students’ problem based on Newman. The research purpose is to describe students’ mistake. The kind of this research is descriptive qualitative. The sample of the research is two VII G students of SMPN 20 KUPANG as sample of the research. The data method collection through test problem solving, interview, documentation, triangulating. The method for analyzing data is by data reduction, data preparation and to conclude. The result of the research showed that the students based on Newman method is level of reading ability, to understand the question, false in transferring, procedure, false to choose the answer in the last of MP and SK such as: the mistake of MP in then reading ability is the students can read. But they cannot get the significant information of the question. In the level of understand of the question, the students able to choose and what is asked for. In the transformation level, the students are able to choose the formula. But wrong to transfer the data. In. the students cannot count. In the level of dividing the last answer, the students are wrong. Because it doesn’t work in the first step. Although SK subject is also false in the level of reading process. The type of SK in the level of reading, the subject can read the question correctly . But the subjects are not able to have the important information. In the level of understanding, the subjects are able to choose what the subjects known and what the information xstated in that. In the level of transfer, student can use the formula. But the formula is not appropriate with the question. In the level of the process, the subjects are not able to count and decide the solving systematic. Based on the four indicators process of Newman in TPM I and TPM II show that the two subjects are not able to solve the question of TPM I and TPM II correctly.
