Abstract

This research is titled Patronage and Clientelism in the Legislative Election of Nagekeo Regency: A Case Study of the Election of Shafar Laga Rema and Maria Roswita Mea Laki in the 2024 Legislative Election. The research problem addressed in this thesis is: What forms of patronage and clientelism were employed by Shafar Laga Rema and Maria Roswita Mea Laki in the 2024 Legislative Election in Nagekeo Regency. The theoretical framework utilized in this study revolves around patronage and clientelism. Primary data sources include informants, while secondary data consists of documents related to the research variables. Data collection techniques encompass interviews, observations, and document analysis. The data analysis process involves data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, followed by descriptive qualitative analysis. The findings of this study reveal the following: (1) Patronage Politics: Patronage played a pivotal role in the victory of Shafar Laga Rema and Maria Roswita Mea Laki in the 2024 Legislative Election in Nagekeo Regency. However, this excluded vote-buying practices. Both candidates prioritized clean campaigns in compliance with legal standards, focusing on work programs relevant to the community, such as infrastructure development and youth empowerment. Shafar emphasized the development of healthcare facilities and support for fishermen, while Maria advanced idea-driven politics and her family’s contributions to infrastructure. Both were actively involved in sports development in Nagekeo and provided tangible assistance to the community, garnering widespread support due to their commitment to regional progress. (2) Political Clientelism: Clientelism was also a key factor in their success, supported by a well-structured campaign strategy involving direct outreach, promotional materials, and social media. Collaboration with traditional leaders, youth, and community members strengthened support, alongside voter education and polling station monitoring to ensure transparency. Their support for sports, fishermen, and infrastructure development further solidified their connection with voters. As Chair of the Nagekeo DPC PKB, Shafar consolidated party cadres and expanded his support base, contributing significantly to his victory in Electoral District I. Based on these findings, the researcher concludes that the victory of Shafar Laga Rema and Maria Roswita Mea Laki in the 2024 Legislative Election was closely linked to the implementation of patronage and clientelism practices.
