Abstract

This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) What are kinds of grammatical errors committed by the eight grade students of SMPN 10 Kota Kupang in school year 2019/20120? (2) What is the most common error made by the eight grade students of SMPN 10 Kota Kupang in school year 2019/2020? Based on the problems stated above the objectives of this study were as follows: (1) To find out kinds of grammatical errors committed by eight grade students of SMPN 10 Kota Kupang in school year 2019/20120. (2) To find out the most common error made by the eight grade students of SMPN 10 Kota Kupang in school year 2019/2020. The subjects of this study were the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kota Kupang, especially students of class G. In class G there were 20 students who participated in this research. The method applied in this study was descriptive method and the instrument used was writing Procedure text and the students were asked to choose one topic out of two:” How to make a glass of coffee,how to make a noodle and how to turn off the computer ”. The writer used surface strategy taxonomy to analyze the students’ errors. (1)After analyzing the data, the writer found the following facts. The total error is 31. Error on omission is 8 (25,80%). Error on addition is 14 (45,16%). Error on misformation is 5 (16,12%) and error on misordering is 2 (9,87%). (2) The most common error encounted by the Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 10 Kota Kupang was addition(45,16%).The suggestions are as follow: (1)The teacher is recommended to teach and give more practice on grammar especially vocabulary and writing procedure text. (2)The students are recommended to study more about the grammar of English, especially present tense and writing procedure text.
