Abstract

The use of river sand as a construction material is the main choice for the engineers. Thus, it is not impossible if the scarce of river sand will inflicted and have the impact on the environment. Sea sand barely used as the construction material due to NaCl content that can cause steel corrosion. Nevertheless an innovation about cigarette butts as the corrosion inhibitor because it can absorb ions or molecules to the surface of metals, increase or reduce anode or catode reaction, also decrease the rate of reactans diffusion to the surface of metals was found recently. The inhibiting process controlled by the substances of cigarette butts it self e.g N80, nicotine and benzoate. Based of the researchs about cigarette butts as the inhibitor, this research use the cigarette butts as the materials to desalting NaCl of sea sand. The specimens are river sand concrete and concrete using sea sand 20 meters from the beach at low tide desalted by 9% cigarette extract then tested on 7th and 28th day. Result shows that cigarette butts extract can increase concrete strength and reduce NaCl rate significantly.
