Abstract

This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1). What are the type of grammatical errors commited by the tenth grade students of SMAN 4 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 in writing descriptive text?(2).What is the common type of grammatical error commited by the tenth grade students of SMAN 4 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 in writing descriptive text?The objectives of the study are:(1).To find out the types of the grammatical errors in writing descriptive text made by the tenth grade students of SMAN 4 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019. (2).To Find out the most common grammatical errors in writing descriptive text by the tenth grade students of SMAN 4 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019.The method used in this study was descriptive method. The aim of the method is to explain a situation which is observed while this research done. The subject of this study was the tenth grade students of SMAN 4 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019. The total number of language class students who consistenly joined in this research is 20 students. The instrument used by the writer to compile the data was written test. The writer gave four topics to the students, there were My Friend, My Father/Mother, My Pet, My Favorite Actor/Actress. The students were asked to choose one topic and write it.The writer allocated 60 minutes to do the writing test. In analysis the students grammatical errors in Writing Descriptive Text, the writer analyzes those errors based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy. Based on the result of the analysis, the writer found that, (1)The result of the study indicates that: (1). The grammatical errors in writing English composition commited by the tenth grade students of SMAN 4 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 were misformation, omission, misordering, and addition. (2) The total number of errors was 73, the errors in misformation were 28, and the erros in omission were 32, the errors in misordering were 6 and the errors in addition were 7. Thus the most common error made by the students in writing was Omission, in the second position was Misformation, and it followed by Addition and Misordering. Based on the result, the writer gives some suggestions. (1) The English teacher should pay more attention on the students’ grammatical errors by providing practices on grammatical aspects particularly tense form in writing descriptive text (2) The students should try to improve their grammatical and vocabulary. They are also advised to enrich themselves with more vocabularies, such as by reading English books, watching English movies and listening English songs. In the classroom if student do not understand yet what their English teacher teaches, they should ask their English teacher.
