Abstract

It was done to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Diakui PGRI Kupang able to understand the newspaper articles they have read? (2) What is the level of the student’s ability in understanding the reading newspaper articles? (3) What is the area of difficulty of the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Diakui PGRI Kupang in comprehending the newspaper articles they have read? The objectives in detail are presented in the following: (1) to find out whether or not the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Diakui PGRI Kupang are able to comprehend the reading on newspaper articles. (2) to find out the student’s ability level in comprehending English reading newspaper articles. (3) to find out the area of difficulty the students may face in understanding the newspaper articles. The scope and limitation in this study is on the reading comprehension ability on newspaper articles of the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Diakui PGRI Kupang and this study was limited on reading comprehension especially literal comprehension of the reading newspaper articles. The method used in this study was descriptive method. It used to describe and to find out the ability level of the students in comprehending newspaper articles. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Diakui PGRI Kupang in the school year 2012/2013 of class XI IPA 1 consists of 26 students. The instrument used to collect the data was test. The questions for the test were derived from reading newspaper articles. It consisted of 45 items and the time allocation was 90 minutes. The title of articles were “Jolie Tours Refugee Camps in India”, “Macca’s Axe did Becks’ Head in”, “The Alaska Pipeline”, “A Time to Kill”, “A Man Hit by Car while Sleeping on Highway”, “Rugby Star” “Portlock Made History, If Not Exhibit” “I Want to be Fat Again”, “A Joke” and 10 sentences from articles. They were adopted from “The Sun”, “The Times”, and “Daily Mail” newspaper. In collecting the data, there were 3 activities; scanning (wall quiz and multiple choice tests), skimming (treasure hunt) and inference (find hidden word). Based on the analysis the writer can conclude that the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Diakui PGRI Kupang are able to comprehend newspaper articles and their level of ability is 7.5 % which is classified as fairly good based on the standard of measurement. The area of difficulties faced by the students of SMA Swasta Diakui PGRI Kupang in comprehending newspaper articles are on the lack of vocabulary and the lack of grammar knowledge. While the students level of ability for each test is as follows: 1. The students’ ability level on test 1 is 7.69: good. 2. The students’ ability level on test 2 is 6.442: average. 3. The students’ ability level on test 3 is 9.84: excellent. 4. The students’ ability level on test 4 is 8.38: good
