Abstract

This research is entitled “A Study on the Students' Perceptions of the Use of Fondi Application in Learning to Speak English at Rosa Mystica Junior High School”. This study aims to answer the following questions; 1. What are the students' perceptions of the use of Fondi application in learning to speak English at Rosa Mystica Junior High School? 2. What are the difficulties experienced by students in learning to speak English using Fondi application? The objectives of this study are; 1. To find out the perception of Rosa Mystica Junior High School students towards the use of Fondi application. 2. To find out the difficulties faced by students in learning to speak. The researcher used descriptive qualitative design in analyzing the data. The instruments used were questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The population of this study was the seventh grade students of SMPK Rosa Mystica Kupang. The total number of students was 21 students. The research findings show that the use of Fondi app in teaching speaking has a significant effect on students' speaking ability. This is evidenced by the results from questionnaires, where the results showed that all students 100% felt their English skills improved in terms of vocabulary and pronunciation, 95.2% in terms of grammar and fluency. Based on the interview the application is also considered easy to use and fun as it allows students to learn while playing. Despite the benefits of the Fondi application, the students also indicated some difficulties in learning to speak English using Fondi, namely internet connection, subscription fees, and speaking anxiety, as their poor English proficiency greatly affects speaking learning in class. Therefore, to increase its effectiveness, solutions such as a more affordable subscription plan, offline features, and a guide to overcoming speaking fear are needed.
