Abstract
Many traditional houses have eroded their value due to the development of the era or due to changes in beliefs. However, one traditional house was found that still survives to this day, namely the traditional house in the Manola Traditional Village in Southwest Sumba Regency. The preservation of this traditional house cannot be separated from the role of the Rato adat as the tribal chief who continues to strive to maintain the ancestral values contained in the traditional house. This study aims to analyze the role of Rato in the preservation of traditional houses in the Manola Traditional Village. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques through interviews, observations, and documentation. The informants in this study consisted of traditional leaders (Rato), the village government and the local community. The results of the study show that”the Rato adat plays an important role in maintaining the existence of the Manola traditional house. They are respected for their ability to make the right decisions, build community participation, and maintain balance between communities and manage resources well. As a traditional leader, Rato carries out two-way communication to prevent conflict and pass on cultural knowledge to the younger generation through rituals by maintaining traditional houses through traditional traditions such as Teda. Preservation is also supported by economic development through handicrafts sold to visitors and the construction of traditional houses with natural materials and supported by the village government whichh is also part of the Manola traditional community and helps maintain the preservation of traditional houses. This study concludes that Rato has a major role in the preservation of traditional houses in Manola Village through strong leadership, respected authority, and effective communication. They are wise in managing resources, resolving conflicts fairly, and inspiring the community to maintain culture and traditions. Preservation efforts are carried out through physical conservation of traditional houses, cultural preservation, development of a craft-based economy, and involvement of the community and government. With the cooperation of all parties, the traditional houses of Manola Village can continue to be maintained as a valuable cultural heritage for future generations, while increasing awareness and appreciation of cultural heritage.
