Abstract
Thesis Title "Analysis of Symbolic Meaning in Belo Baja Dance Among the Community of Ratulodong Village, Tanjung Bunga District, East Flores" by Katharina Ernawati Koten (17121041), with Supervisor I Katharina Kojaing, S.Pd., M.Sn and Supervisor II Kadek Paramitha Hariswari, S.Pd., M.Pd. Belo Baja dance is a traditional dance originating from Ratulodong Village, East Flores Regency. Not many people know about this dance and no in-depth research has ever been conducted on it, making this study important as a form of cultural preservation for East Flores. The research problems are: 1) What is the presentation form of Belo Baja dance, and 2) What is the symbolic meaning of the costumes and makeup in Belo Baja dance. The objectives of this research are to describe the presentation form and analyze the symbolic meaning of the costumes and makeup in Belo Baja dance. This research uses a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods, and data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation. The research results show that: (1) the presentation form of Belo Baja dance is divided into 3 stages: opening, core, and closing stages. The opening stage begins with the MC reading a synopsis accompanied by flute music while the dancers prepare outside the performance arena. The core stage is divided into 3 parts: 1) 4 male dancers from both groups advance alternately performing archery and spearing movements. 2) Battle scene between two groups of male dancers performing archery and spearing movements, along with female dancers moving gracefully. 3) The climax of the dance depicting the peace process led by two traditional leaders, with male dancers sitting cross-legged and female dancers standing while performing various movements signifying the customary process. The closing stage features all dancers forming a semicircle formation while holding hands as a symbol of unity, accompanied by music and the song O Dua Le, then the dancers slowly retreat from the performance stage. (2) The symbolic meaning in this dance can be seen from the dancers' costumes and makeup aspects. 1) The nowing costume (men's sarong) and kewatek (women's sarong) symbolize unity and honor, kedewak (belt) symbolizes the relationship between nature and ancestors, senuji shirt symbolizes kinship, shawl symbolizes unity, yellow and red cloth symbolize wisdom and courage, nile (necklace) symbolizes natural wealth, belao (earrings) and kala bala (ivory bracelets) symbolize women's honor, Kiri Manuk Tolo’ Bura (feather comb) symbolizes self-purification. 2) The dancers' makeup featuring diamond symbols represents fertility and prosperity.
