Abstract
The caste system is a form of social stratification that categorizes individuals based on specific attributes such as occupation, origin, and family status. In many cultures, caste or social class systems determine individuals’ roles and social standing within the community. This study adopts a qualitative approach, as it aims to explore in depth the implications of the caste/rank system on social relationships and marriage patterns in Bogenga Village, Susu Sub-district, Bajawa District, Ngada Regency. Data collection methods included interviews, observations, and document analysis. The findings indicate that the caste system in Bogenga Village still has a strong influence in the economic, social, and political domains. Inequalities are evident in income, asset ownership, employment, education, as well as social recognition and marriage. In the political sphere, decision-making and traditional leadership are predominantly controlled by the upper caste. However, signs of change are beginning to emerge, moving toward a more equitable and inclusive societal structure. Based on the findings of the study regarding the implications of the caste system on social relations and marriage in Bogenga Village, it can be concluded that the caste system continues to significantly influence community life, particularly in three main aspects: economic, social, and political. Economically, caste differences result in disparities in asset ownership, employment opportunities, and access to education. Socially, the caste system still affects how people interact and build relationships. In terms of politics and traditional customs, caste plays a critical role in determining who can lead or participate in decision-making processes. Typically, only individuals from the upper caste are eligible to become mosalaki (customary leaders) or take part in communal deliberations.
