Abstract

The Rangkuk Alu dance is one of the traditional dances originating from East Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. Etymologically, Rangkuk means rhythm, while Alu refers to a long wooden pestle used for pounding rice. This dance is a transformation of a traditional game into a form of performing art rich in cultural values. This study aims to: (1) describe the presentation of the Rangkuk Alu dance at Sanggar Wela Kaweng in Watu Mori Village, East Manggarai Regency, and (2) identify the factors influencing its sustainability. The research employed a qualitative approach with an ethnographic method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation in Watu Mori Village. The findings reveal that the presentation of the Rangkuk Alu dance involves three main elements—dancers, bamboo players, and musicians—arranged in three performance stages: opening (reading of the synopsis), core (jumping movements to avoid bamboo claps accompanied by traditional music and local songs), and closing (expressing gratitude to the audience). The presentation combines distinctive movements, dynamic floor patterns, traditional music, and culturally meaningful songs. Internal factors influencing the dance’s sustainability include cultural preservation efforts, originality and adaptation, the meaning and function of the dance for the community, and the commitment of the cultural group. External factors include the influence of globalization, social media, government policies, community support, and changes in social values. Preserving the Rangkuk Alu dance is essential as a form of respect for local cultural heritage and as a medium for character education among younger generations.
