Abstract
The Kede tradition is a form of animal exchange in order to fulfill customary obligations, such as death, which is full of family and spiritual meaning. The problem underlying this research is the lack of understanding among the wider community regarding the role of Talla music in the Kede tradition. This research aims to examine the form of Talla music in the Kede tradition in relation to the lives of the people in the region. The problem in this study is (1) What is the form of presentation of Talla music in the Kede tradition of Southwest Sumba, (2) What are the values contained in the Kede tradition and what are the functions of Talla music in the Kede tradition in the Kadi Wanno Village community, Southwest Sumba Regency. This study aims (1) To determine the form of presentation of Talla music in the Kede tradition in the Kadi Wanno Village community, Southwest Sumba Regency, (2) To determine the values and functions of Talla music in the Kede tradition in the Kadi Wanno Village community, Southwest Sumba Regency. This study uses a qualitative approach with an ethnographic method. Through a qualitative-descriptive approach using observation methods, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results of the study show that Talla music has a distinctive presentation structure, played in groups by adult men, with repetitive rhythmic beats and integrated in every stage of the Kede traditional procession. The main instruments used include various types of gongs such as Pabale, Kabonguka, Kawukeka, Duatillu, Talla Kalada, and drums (Bedu) and drums (Bamba). This music not only serves as accompaniment to traditional processions, but also as a spiritual symbol, a medium for cultural communication, and a reinforcement of the community's social identity. In addition to its aesthetic function, Talla music also embodies noble values such as communality, reciprocity, and spirituality. This music serves as a means of strengthening solidarity, maintaining social balance, and bringing a sacred nuance to the traditional life of the Kadi Wanno community. Thus, Talla music is an integral part of the Kede tradition and plays a vital role in preserving the local cultural values of the Southwest Sumba community.
