Abstract

This study aims to analyze the application of Bill Kovach’s five elements of journalism in the news coverage of the geothermal development project in Poco Leok by the online news portal Floresa.co. The project has sparked controversy due to concerns that it may threaten the living space of indigenous communities from social, cultural, and environmental perspectives. The media plays a vital role in presenting the truth, safeguarding public interests, and serving as a forum for criticism of government policies. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis as the primary technique, supported by data triangulation through observation, interviews, and documentation. The analysis focuses on five elements of journalism: Truth, Loyalty, Discipline of Verification, Independence, and Watchdog Function. The findings reveal that while the media fulfills essential journalistic functions such as truth-telling, loyalty to citizens, and monitoring power, significant weaknesses remain. These include insufficient investigative verification, narrative imbalance, and the failure to expose underlying networks of interest behind the project. Overall, the study reflects the broader challenges of journalism in Indonesia when covering complex development issues. A more investigative, balanced, and collaborative approach involving diverse stakeholders is required to produce reporting that is not only critical but also solution-oriented, thereby strengthening journalism’s role as a pillar of democracy.
