Abstract

Thesis Title: The Relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Bullying Behavior among Eighth Grade Students at SMP Negeri 16 Kupang in the 2024/2025 Academic Year. The research problem is: Is there a relationship between emotional intelligence and bullying behavior among eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 16 Kupang in the 2024/2025 academic year? The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between emotional intelligence and bullying behavior among these students. This research is a quantitative study. The variables in this study include the independent variable (X), which is emotional intelligence, and the dependent variable (Y), which is bullying behavior. The sample of this study consist of 41 eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 16 Kupang in the 2024/2025 academic year. The data collection instrument used was a questionnaire. The data analysis technique employed was the product-moment correlation. The results of the study show that the calculated correlation coefficient (r) is 0.458. This value falls within the coefficient range of 0.40–0.599, indicating a moderate relationship between the two variables, and the significance value is 0.003 < 0.05. These results indicate that there is a relationship between emotional intelligence and bullying behavior among eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 16 Kupang in the 2024/2025 academic year. Based on the findings, the researcher offers the following suggestions: 1) The school principal is expected to facilitate the school counselor in designing programs aimed at enhancing students’ emotional intelligence to reduce bullying behavior. 2) School counselors are encouraged to strengthen collaboration with homeroom teachers and subject teachers to identify students with low emotional intelligence and those involved in bullying—either as perpetrators or victims—so that appropriate counseling services can be provided. 3) Students are expected to enhance their emotional awareness in order to better control negative behaviors, including bullying.
