Abstract

Chemistry learning at Maktihan Christian Senior High School often faces various obstacles, particularly because many students find it difficult to understand the material. This difficulty is caused by the large amount of material consisting of abstract concepts, such as reaction rate, which must be taught in a relatively short time. The chemistry learning process in grade XI SCIENCE still uses lectures and group discussions to deliver the material, which leads to boredom. Students find it difficult to understand the material due to a lack of attention from the teacher during teaching, and students are less active in seeking information from other sources about reaction rate material. Therefore, the knowledge students gain is only obtained from the teacher. The discovery learning approach is a learning approach to develop students' active learning methods by discovering for themselves, investigating for themselves, so that the results obtained will not be easily forgotten by students. The discovery learning approach is a learning approach that encourages students to actively seek and discover their own knowledge, not just passively receiving information. This study aims to determine the ability of teachers in managing learning that applies the discovery learning approach, the learning outcomes of class XI IPA students at Maktihan Christian High School, and students' responses to the learning. This type of research is descriptive and was conducted in the odd semester of the 2024/2025 academic year at Maktihan Christian High School. The variables in this study include: the ability of teachers in managing learning with the discovery learning approach on the material of reaction rates, student learning outcomes, and student responses to the learning. The population of this study was all class XI IPA students at Maktihan Christian High School, and because the number was only 14 people, all of them were sampled using a saturated sampling technique. The learning tools used included the syllabus, lesson plans, teaching materials, and student worksheets. The instruments used included: teacher ability observation sheets, assignment questions, learning outcome tests/exams, psychomotor observation sheets, presentation assessments, and student response questionnaires. Data collection techniques included observation and testing. The results showed that teachers' ability to manage learning using the discovery learning approach was in the good category, with an average score of 3.975. Student learning outcomes were classified as complete, with an average final score of 86. Meanwhile, student responses to the learning were very good, with an average percentage of 91%.
