Abstract

This research is titled “Redesign of the Regina Angelorum Orphanage in Atambua: A Sustainable Architecture Approach.” The study aims to redesign the Regina Angelorum Orphanage to become a viable building with a sustainable architecture concept, and to provide adequate facilities to support the various activities of its residents. The methodology used includes primary data collection through field studies and interviews. Field studies are conducted to accurately and thoroughly assess the current building conditions, while interviews are carried out with relevant parties such as nuns and resident children to complement the observational data. The research findings reveal that the Regina Angelorum Orphanage, which has been established since 1988, is experiencing various structural and functional problems. These issues include ceiling damage, a malfunctioning septic tank, poor ventilation and lighting, inadequate sanitation, and insufficient space for children’s activities. The orphanage also faces challenges in meeting the standards for decent housing, especially with the increasing number of children and their special needs. The conclusion of this study indicates that the physical and functional condition of the Regina Angelorum Orphanage does not meet the expected standards. The proposed redesign aims to create facilities that align with decent living standards by applying sustainable architecture principles. This approach includes efficient energy use, optimal land utilization, and the implementation of innovative technologies and materials. Thus, the redesign of the orphanage is expected to improve the well-being of its residents and have a positive impact on social, economic, and environmental aspects.
