Abstract

The study was conducted to answer the following questions. (1) Are the eighth-grade students of SMPN 1Kupang able to understand the text they have read? (2) What is the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kupang in understanding the text they have read? The objectives of the study are (1) To find out whether or not the eighth grade students ofSMP Negeri 1 Kupang able to comprehend the reading text. (2) To find out the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kupang in comprehending the reading text. Toanswer the questions mentioned above the writer used the descriptive qualitative method. The aim of this method is to give or explain the data obtained when this research was conducted. The subject of this study was the eighth-grade students of SMPN 1Kupang. The total number of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 1 Kupang was 405 and divided into 13 classes.In this study, the writer chose one class of the eighth grade students as the subject of the study namely class VIII-C. The total number of the students is 20 students,but the writer only tests 18 students because only 18 students were present in the class. In collecting the data the writer used “Test” as the instrument. It consisted of 3 reading texts (1) Malin Kundang, (2) Sangkuriang, (3) A Woman and the Wolves. The result of the study shows that (a) theeighth-grade students of SMPN 1 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 were able to comprehend the text they read. (b) Their ability level is“Fairly Good” (6.7).Beside, it can be seen that, there are 2 students (11%) at very good level, 3 students (17%) at good level, 4 students (22%) at fairly good level, 7 students (39%) at average level and 2 students (11%) at below average level. There were no students in excellent level, poor level, very poor level, bad level, and very bad level. Based on the result of analysis the writer would like to offer some suggestions: (1) For the English teacher, in order to improve the students’ ability in reading comprehension, the English teacher should give more explanations about English reading text and they also should help them to master onvocabulary that can help them comprehend reading text. (2) The students should practice English reading text. They should have English – English and English – Indonesia dictionaries to look up the difficult words they find in reading any text
