Abstract

The study was conducted to answer the following questions. (1) Are the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang able to understand the text they have read? (2) What is the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang in understanding the text they have read? The objectives of the study are (1) To find out whether or not the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang able to comprehend the reading text. (2) To find out the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang in comprehending the reading text. To answer the questions mentioned above the writer used the descriptive qualitative method. The aim of this method is to give or explain the data obtained when this research was conducted. The subject of this study was the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang. The total number of the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang was 343 and was divided into 13 classes.In this study, the writer chose one class of the eighth grade students as the subject of the study namely class VIII-B. The total number of the students is 23 students,but the writer only tested 18 students because only 18 students were present in the class. In collecting the data the writer used “Test” as the instrument. It consisted of 6 reading texts (1) Peter, (2) My Best Friend, (3) My Pet, (4) Rabbit (5) My Classroom (6) Paris . The result of the study shows that (a) the eighth-grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 were able to comprehend the text they read. (b) Their ability level are “Average” (5.8). Beside, it can be seen that, there are 3 students (17%) at very good level, 3 students (17%) at good level, 4 students (22%) at fairly good level, 5 students (27%) at below average level and 3 students (17%) at poor level. There were no students in excellent level, very poor level, bad level, and very bad level. Based on the result of analysis the writer would like to offer some suggestion: (1) For the English teacher, in order to improve the students’ ability in reading comprehension, the English teacher should give more explanations about English reading text and they also should help them to master onvocabulary that can help them comprehend reading text. (2) The students should practise English reading text. They should have English – English and English – Indonesian dictionaries to look up the difficult words they find in reading any text.
