Abstract
This study is entitled “A Study on the Ability in Writing Descriptive Text of the Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the School Year 2019/2020”. This study was conducted to answer the following questions:1. Are the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 able to write descriptive text? 2. What is the level of ability of the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 in writing descriptive text? 3. What are the areas of difficulties faced by the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 in writing descriptive text? Whereas the objectives of the study are as follows: 1) To find out whether or not the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 able to write descriptive text. 2). To find out the level of ability of the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 in writing a descriptive text. 3). To find out the areas of difficulties faced by the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 in writing a descriptive text. The method used in this study was descriptive method. The study was conducted at SMPN 10 Kupang. The subject of the study was 20 students of the eighth grade specially class VIII H. The instrument used for this research was writing test. The writer asks the students to write descriptive text by choosing one of the pictures (former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono or President Joko Widodo) and describe him in 4 or more sentences. Based on the analysis the writer can conclude that: 1) The eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 were able to write descriptive text. 2) The level of ability of the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in writing descriptive text was 7.55 classified as “Good”. 3) Although the students score was good, but there were some difficulties faced by the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in writing descriptive text as follows: The students still produced ungrammatical sentences and lach of English vocabulary. Besides, the writer found that there were no students getting the highest score 11-12 (Excellent), there was 1 student getting 9-10 (Very good), there were 18 students getting 7-8 (Good), there was 1 student getting 5-6 (Average), and were no getting 3-4 (Below average),1-2 (Bad). Threfore the writer suggests the following: 1). The English teacher should pay attention on the grammatical aspects such as the use of article, word order, subject verb agreement, and tenses because many errors committed by students in these aspects. 2). The English teacher should encourage the students to have sufficient stock of English vocabulary. Some students still face difficulties dealing with the content and the language use in the generic structure of the text. 3). The English teacher should pay attention on mechanics aspect such as the punctuations and spelling of words because some students were still confused how to put the punctuation correctly.
