Abstract

The topic is specified into two research questions: (1) What are the types of grammatical errors committed by the sixth semester students of English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University Kupang in the academic year 2019/2020? (2) What is the most common error made by the sixth semester students of English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University Kupang in the academic year 2019/2020? The objectives of the study are as follows: (1) Tofind out the types of grammatical errors committed by the sixth semester students of English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University Kupang in academic year 2019/2020. (2) To figure out the common error made by the sixth semester students of English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University Kupang in academic year 2019/2020. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative method. While the subject of the study was the sixth semester students of English Education Study program of Widya Mandira Catholic University. The result of the research shows the following facts (1) The errors made by students were omission, addition, misformation and misordering. The total number of grammatical errors made by students in constructing recount text is 36 (100%). Most of students made errors in misformation with the total number of errors are 19 (52.7%), omission errors 11 (30.5%), misordering errors 4 (11.1%) and addition error 2 (5.5%). (2) The most common error made by students in writing recount text was misformation then followed by omission, misordering and then addition. Based on the result of the study the writer would like to suggest (1) The English lecturers of the sixth semester students of Widya Mandira Catholic University, especially in grammar and TEFL courses are suggested to remind the students to focus on grammar especially in past tense, vocabularies and how to make good sentences based on the tenses used in writing of recount text and (2) The students are suggested to learn grammar especially in past tense and vocabularies in writing recount text.
