Abstract

Sand dredging activities can have an impact on water quality. One of the biological water quality assessments is based on plankton abundance index and diversity index. The purpose of this study was to determine the comparison of plankton abundance and diversity at dredging and non-dredging locations in the Benanain River. This research was conducted in November - December 2019. Sampling using plankton net then samples were preserved, observed and identified using identification books and internet browsing. Abiotic factors include temperature, water brightness, substrate, pH and dissolved oxygen. Data analysis included Shanon-Winer diversity index, abundance index, uniformity index and dominance index. Then multiple linear regression analysis and paired t test were performed. At the location of sand dredging found 20 species, 14 families and 13 orders. Plankton diversity index value at the sand dredging location is classified as moderate (2,412). Plankton abundance index values are relatively low (5252 ind / L). Plankton uniformity index is 0.81 classified as uniform. Whereas in the non-dredging location, 27 species were found, consisting of 21 families and 16 orders. The diversity index value is relatively high (3.02). The abundance index value is moderate (11103 ind / L). Plankton uniformity index value is 0.91 classified as uniform. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the abiotic factor had a significant influence on the diversity and abundance of plankton in both sand dredging and non-sand dredging locations (sig 0,000 and 0,001). Based on the results of the paired t-test analysis showed that the diversity of species at the locations of sand dredging and non-sand dredging was not significantly different (sig 0.447> 0.05), this applies equally to the abundance of plankton at the location of dredging sand and non dredging sand which is not significantly different (sig 0.433> 0.05). Based on the results obtained it can be concluded that the abundance and diversity of plankton at the dredging and non-dredging locations differed insignificantly.
