Abstract

The study was conducted to answer the following questions. (1) are the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Karanu Waikabubak in the school year 2019/2020 able to master second conditional sentence? (2) what is the level of ability of the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Karanu Waikabubak in the school year 2019/2020 in mastering second conditional sentence? The objectives of the study are (1) to find out whether the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Karanu Waikabubak in the school year 2019/2020 are able to master second conditional sentence or not. (2) to find out the level of ability of the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Karanu Waikabubak in the school year 2019/2020 in mastering second conditional sentence.To answer the questions mentioned above the writer used the quantitative- qualitative method. The aimwas to explain the data obtained from this research by using words and numbers. The result of the study shows the following facts. (1)Theeleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Karanu Waikabubak in the school year 2019/2020are not able to master the second conditional sentence. (2) Their ability level is“below average” with a total score of 4.6%. Their level of ability is as follows. 2 students (10%) got fairly good level of ability ranging from 6.6 – 7.5, 4 students (20%) got average level of ability ranging from 5.6 – 6.5, 6 students (30%) got below average level of ability ranging from 4.6 – 5.5, 5 students (25%) got poor level of ability ranging from 3.6 – 4.5, 1 student (5%) got very poor level of ability ranging from 2.6 – 3.5, 2 students (10%) got very bad level of ability ranging from 0 – 1.Moreover, based on the result of analysis, the writer would like to offer some suggestions:(1) The English teacher should improve the students’ ability in second conditional sentence and should give more explanations to understand second conditional sentence and they also should help them to master vocabulary which can help them able to master second conditional sentence. (2) The writer suggests the students to comprehend second conditional sentence in particular and learn English in general because their ability level is below average i.e 4.6.
