Abstract

This study is entitled “An Analysis on Grammatical Errors in Speaking Performed by the Second Semester Students of English Education Study Program in the Academic Year 2019/2020”. The topic is specified into two research questions: (1) What are the grammatical errors produced by the second semester students of English Education Study Program in the academic year 2019/2020 in speaking English? (2)What is the most common error committed by the second semester students of English Education Study Program in the academic year 2019/2020? The objectives of the study are as follow: (1) to find out the grammatical errors produced by the second semester students of English Education Study Program in the academic year 2019/2020 in speaking English (2) to find out the most common error committed by the second semester students of English Education Study Program in the academic year 2019/2020. This research is qualitative research.The subjects of this study are the second semester students of English Education Study Program in Widya Mandira Catholic University, in Kupang, NTT. The result of the research shows the following facts (1) there are 11 categories of 2 types of errors produced by the second semester students of English Education Study Program in the academic year 2019/2020 in speaking English. The first type of errors is morphology that has 6 categories. They are indefinite article incorrect, possesive case incorrect, third singular person incorrect, simple past tense incorrect, past participle incorrect and comparative adjective/adverb incorrect. The second type of errors is syntax that has 4 categories. They are noun phrase incorrect, verb phrase incorrect, verb and verb construction, word order, and errors in some transformation (2) The most common error committed by the second semester students of English Education Study Program in the academic year 2019/2020 is simple past tense incorrect with the total number 71 (86.58%) made by the 22 students. Based on the result of the study the writer would like to suggest that (1) The English lecturers should give more attention to teach the students about grammar especially in tenses, verb, noun, adjective, auxiliary, and articles. (2) The students should learn and improve their knowledge about grammar especially in tenses, verb, noun, adjective, auxiliary, and articles.
