Abstract

Has been done the research about the synthesis and characterization of silica gel of waste agate from the Nian Village of Timor Tengah Utara (TTU) Regency using sol gel method. The purpose of this study were to know the chemical composition, the characteristics of the silica gel which is synthesized and to know the potential of the powder of waste agate from the Nian Village, which can be used as a source of synthesis of silica gel.Synthesis of silica gel beginning with washing the powder waste agate with HCl 2 M. The extraction of silica is made by reacting NaOH 3 M to obtain a sodium silicate. Sodium silicate is synthesized into a silica gel by adding HCl 3 M drops by drops. Based on the results of the characterization of the XRF powders waste agate has a content of Si 35.6% and the largest contentis a Ca that is 54,3 %, while the results of XRD test showed crystalline phase with a diffraction pattern which is narrow, pointed and have a lot of peaks indicating that the powder waste of agate, there are still have other components. The results of the synthesis of silica gels were characterized with instruments XRF, XRD and FTIR with each result successively, namely the silica gel has a content SiO2 99.1% and Si 97.6 %, forming an amorphous phase,and has functional groups siloxane and silanol groups. Powder waste of agate from the Nian Village can be used as one source of the synthesis of the silica gel because it has a high level purityand has amorphous phase and has functional groups siloxane and silanol groups.
