Abstract

Contextual teaching and learning (CTL) is influlenced by the philosophy of constructivism which holds that the nature of knowledge influences the concept of the learning process, because learning is not merely memorizing but constructing knowledge through experience. Knowledge is not the result of giving from others like teachers, but the result of the process of constructing that is carried out by each individual. Basic competence is a reference in choosing essential subject matter, Essential material is selected to achieve basic competency, For this reason, teachers are given the freedom to determine the subject matter in accrodance with the characteritics of the region. In this case the application of the principles of contextual teaching and learning (also known as contextual learning). Contextual teaching and learning (CTL) is a learning approach that emphasizes process of full student involvement to be able to find the material being learned (circle material) and relate it to real life situations so that it encourages students to be able to apply it in their lives. By using the contextual learning method students are expectedto be able to apply it in everyday life to mathematics learning material. In addition, teachers can use one method of learning CTL in combination with other learning models for the advancement of education in their respective places.
