Abstract

The objectives of the study are (1) To find out the ability of the eleventh grade students of SMKN 2 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 in using conditional sentences (2) To find out the difficulties faced by the eleventh grade students of SMKN 2 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 in using conditional sentences. In this study, the writer used descriptive method. Descriptive method indicates that the gathering data is based on the current condition, and descriptive method is used because frequently made for the purpose of pertain the normal of typical condition or practice. The writer used test as the instrument. Research instruments are the device used to obtain data is written test. There are 40 test items. These 40 items are divided into multiple choices and simple completion test item. The multiple choices consist of 20 items which are 10 open conditional sentences test items and 10 hypothetical present conditional sentences test items. While that 20 simple completion items consisted of 10 open conditional sentences test items and 10 hypothetical present conditional sentences test items. Based on the research, it can be concluded that most eleventh grade students of SMKN 2 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 in using conditional sentences, especially Multimedia 1 class are able to use Conditional Sentences. The results of the test show that out of 37 students, that 5 students (13. 51 %) got “good” level of ability, 13 students (35,14 %) got “fairly good” level of ability, 10 students (27.03 %) got “average” level of ability, 5 students (13.51 %) got “below average” level of ability, 3 students (8.11 %) got “poor” level of ability, 1 student (2.70 %) got “bad poor” level of ability based on standard of measurement. Based on the student’s grades for the whole test it can be seen that the total number of the correct answer is 946 (64 %) and incorrect answer 545 (36 %). It means that the ability level of the whole students on conditional sentences is 946 (64 %), they have the grades 231.9 (6.26), which is classified “average” level of ability according to standard of measurement. The analysis showed the total test of conditional sentences by the students in Multimedia 1 class with 61.93% correct answer out 922 responses and 38.07 % incorrect answer out 558 responses. The students have difficulties faced in using conditional sentences especially they didn’t understand yet the form and the function of conditional sentences which are changing verb form in open conditional and present hypothetical conditional sentences
