Abstract

It aims at answering the following questions; 1) To find out Is teaching vocabulary by using pictures effective to increase vocabulary mastery of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017,? 2) What is vocabulary mastery level of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 afterbeing taught by using pictures,? The aims of the research are: 1) To find out the effectiveness of using pictures for teaching vocabulary in the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017.? 2) Tofind out the vocabulary mastery level of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in the school year 2016/2007 after being taught by using pictures.The subject of this study was the seventh grade students class F of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017. There were 26 students. The instruments of this study were lesson plan, pictures, pre-test and post-test. This study is CAR (classroom Action Research) which consisted of two cycles. Before conducting the cycles, pre-test was given and the students who failed the test were 26 students or 100% and the level achievement was very poor and in the post-test I the students who passed the test were 8 or 31%, while in the post-test II the students who passed the test were 26 students or 100% and the level student achievement was good. It is determined by the grade achieved by the students. The students who passed the test were 26 students who got 60-92. The result of data analysis shows that: 1) The used of pictures as teaching media is effective in teaching vocabulary for the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 . 2) The students vocabulary level after being taught using pictures is good where all of the students who participated in this study passed the test and the students percentage average increased from 59,25% in cycle I to 76,16% in cycle II. Based on the result of the study the writer offers some suggestion as follows: 1) The English teachersespecially the English teachers of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang are suggested to use pictures as one of the media in teaching and learning process to stimulate students positive participation. 2) The students of English Department who really want to be professional teachers are recommended to use CAR so that they can reflect the weaknesses in teaching and learning process, then they can prepare new strategy to improve the weaknesses in the next meeting.
