Abstract
It was conducted to answer the following questions; (1) Are the eleventh grade students of SMA Bina Karya Atambua in the school year 2019/2020 able to use active and passive voices? (2) What is the ability level of the eleventh grade students of SMA Bina Karya Atambua in the school year2019/2020 in using active and passive voices? The objectives of the study were (1) To investigate whether or not the students of SMA Bina Karya Atambua in the school year 2019/2020 are able to understand active and passive sentences (2) To investigate theeleventh grade students’ ability level of SMA Bina Karya Atambua in the school year 2019/2020 in using active and passive sentences. The method used in this study was descriptive method. The aim of this method is to give or explain a situation which is observed while the research is done. The subject of the study was the eleventhgrade students of SMA Bina Karya Atambua(Class X1 IPA). The total number of the students of class IPA 1 was 30as the sample of this study. The instrument used in this study wasa test on active and passive sentences. The test consisted of 50 test items of multiple choices. The result of this study showedthat 1. The eleventhgrade students of SMA Bina Karya Atambua were not able to use active and passive voices. 2. The ability level of the students in using active and passive voicesclassified as “Below Average to Average” (68.4%). There were 3 students (10%) who got the score 90-100 (Good to Excellent). There were 13 students (43.3%) who got the score 70-89 (Average to Good). There were 9students (30%) who got the score 50-69 (Below Average to Average). There were 4 students (13.3%) who got the score 30-49 (Bad). There was 1 student (3.4%) who got the score 0-29 (Very Bad). Based on the result of the study, the writer suggests:(1) For the English teacher, the result of the data analysis can give valuable contribution and be the English teacher’s consideration for the next teaching and learning process. Such as by asking students to not depend on using active sentences dominantly. (2) For the students, students can be motivated to study more about English, especially the form of active and passive voices, how to change subject and object into the form of active and passive voices and also pronoun.
