Abstract

This study conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Is Think Pair Share technique effective to improve reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of Suria catholic senior high school Atambua in the school year 2017/2018? (2) How is Think Pair Share technique implemented to improve reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of Suria catholic senior high school Atambua in the school year 2017/2018? (3) What is the level of reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of Suria catholic senior high school Atambua in the school year 2017/2018? This study was conducted by using classroom action research in two cycles. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade of Suria Catholic Senior High School Atambua in the school year 2017/2018. The eleventh grade of Suria catholic senior high school consists of nine classes, but the writer only chose one class, it is language program which consists of twenty students. The instruments used in this study were reading tests, lesson plans, students’ answer sheets, and observation sheet. There were two cycles which has been conducted by the writer. In obtaining the data, the writer used test (Exercise and Post-test) and teacher observation sheet. The result of the test were used to know the students’ comprehension and observation sheet was used to assess teacher performance in teaching learning process by using Think Pair Share technique. Exercise 1 of cycle I showed that only one discussion group got a bad score in range of 62 that was group 3. Exercise II showed that group 1 and group 3 got a perfect score in range of 100 while group 2 got score in range of 87 and group 4 got score in range of 75. The result of the post-test I, all the discussion groups got the same score in range of 80. After giving the treatment in cycle 1, students’ score of discussion group have improvement. Then the writer continued to cycle II. Exercise I of cycle II showed that group 1 and group 2 got perfect score in range of 100, whereas group 3 and group 4 only got score in range of 87. Exercise II showed that group 1 and group 3 got score in range of 100 and group 2 and group 4 got score in range of 87. The result of the post-test in the cycle II showed that all the score students’ discussion group improved to 100 (Excellent). Based on the result, it can be concluded that Think Pair Share technique was really effectively to use in teaching reading comprehension. It is also necessary to follow-up this technique to get more a good skill and action in teaching reading comprehension. So the result of this study showed (1) Think Pair Share is effective to improve reading comprehension on analytical exposition text of the eleventh grade students of Suria catholic senior high school Atambua in the school year 2017/2018, (2) Think Pair Share technique implemented can improve reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of Suria catholic senior high school Atambua in the school year 2017/2018, and (3) the level of reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of Suria catholic senior high school Atambua after being taught by using Think Pair Share is excellent.
