Abstract
It is conducted to answer the following questions: (1) What are types of grammatical errors in writing descriptive text made by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020? (2) What is the most common grammatical error committed by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 in writing descriptive text? The objectives of the study are: (1)to find out the grammatical errors in writing descriptive texts made by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020. (2) to find out the most common grammatical error committed by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 in writing descriptive text. The subject of this study was 20 students of the tenth grade students of class XSocial one.The writer used descriptive method in this study and the instrument was writing test in gathering the required data. The students were asked to write the descriptive texts of places. Each student was asked to write a descriptive text about the famous tourism object that had been visited based on the generic structure of descriptive text. The taxonomy used by the writer in analyzing the data was surface strategy taxonomy. The result of the study showed that: (1) The errors committed by the tenth grade students of SMAN 3 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 were misformation 82 (52.90%), omission 40 (25.80%), addition 19 (12.25%), misordering 14 (9.03%). (2) The most common error committed by the tenth grade students of SMAN 3 Kupang in the school year 2019-2020 was misformation 82 (52.90%). Based on the result of this study, the following were the suggestions for the teacher and the students. (1) The teacher should teach the students how to write a good text especially in writing descriptive text and the teacher should give the chance to the students to practice it. (2) The students should learn more how to write well especially in writing decriptive text and should pay attention to grammar and vocabulary especially the tense they use in writing.
