Abstract

It was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Do the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 commit grammatical errors in writing a hortatory exposition text? (2) What are kinds of grammatical errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 in writing a hortatory exposition text? (3) What is the most common error committed by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 in writing a hortatory exposition text? The subjects of this study were the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang especially XI IPA 6. There are 33 students in that class but the writer only choose 20 students which taken from randomly by using whatsapp application. The method applied in this study was descriptive method and the instrument used was writing task. The students were given chance to write a hortatory exposition text based on the topic chosen. The taxonomy used by the writer in analyzing the data was surface strategy taxonomy, consisting of omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The result of the analysis showed that: (1) The students commited errors in writing hortatory text, (2) The errors committed by the eleventh grade students especially XI IPA 6 of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 were omission 32 (29.09%), addition 21 (19.09%), misformation 48 (43.63%), and misordering 9 (8.18%). The total number of error was 110, (3) The most frequent error was misformation. Based on the result of this study, the following were the suggestions for English education study program, the teacher in general especially of SMAN 5 Kupang, the writer, and the students of SMAN 5 Kupang. (1) English Study Program should prepare prospective teachers who do not only master skills and subskills of English but also know about kinds of English text, their functions and generic structures and master how to write an English text, (2) The teacher should teach the students how to write a good text especially in writing hortatory exposition text and give the students chance to practise it. So the students should not only focus on the generic structure of hortatory exposition text but also on grammar especially in using simple present tense modals, thinking verbs, action verbs, adverbs, adjectives and conjuction, (3) The writer, as a prospective teacher should know kinds of text of English and their function and generic structure. As a prospective teacher, the writer should build his knowledge and develop both the writing skills and grammar aspect in English, (4) The students have learn more on how to write a good hortatory exposition text by concerning the grammatical aspects regarding tenses, verb, noun and preposition. The students should not only focus on the generic structure of hortatory exposition text but also focus on grammar especially in using simple present tense, modals, thinking verbs, action verbs, adverbs, adjectives, conjuction, noun and preposition.
