Abstract

This study is entitled “A Study on Terms of Address of Rongga Language in East Manggarai Regency”. This descriptive qualitative research intends to investigate the encoding relationship of Rongga language in East Manggarai Regency. To analyze the data, the theory of sociolinguistics especially language in interaction was applied. The data were obtained through elicitation technique. For the elicitation technique a number of questions were prepared in written form to elicit the data from the informants. This study was conducted to find out what are the terms of address of Rongga Language? And what are the functions and the meanings of terms of address of Rongga Language in East Manggarai Regency? The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from the two informants and the free interviewing informant. The instruments that the writer used in this research were list of questions, handphone, pen and notebook. The data were analyzed based on forms, functions and meaning. The result of this study showed the following linguistics facts (1) there are four kinds of addressing terms used in Rongga language which are identified on the basis of family relationship/kinship terms, politeness, age and non family relationship. (2) There are three functions of terms of address of Rongga language namely Politeness marker, Honorific marker and Intimacy marker. (3) The meaning of terms of address in Rongga Language is closely related to their function. Lastly the writer suggested that the experts of linguistics should continue the study to confirm and elaborate the linguistic evidence in encoding relationship of Rongga language in East Manggarai Regency. The English learners from Rongga ethnic group are expected to make use of English as instrument for promoting Rongga culture especially terms of address in Rongga language which have been resulted from this research. The writer also suggested that the local government of East Manggarai Regency and the central government of Republic of Indonesia should prepare funds for a comprehensive study of Rongga language, so terms of address in Rongga language can be maintained, developed and functioned effectively in the society.
