Abstract

It was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) What are the types of grammatical errors committed by the seventh grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang in the School Year 2019/2020 in their speaking performance? (2) What is the most type of grammatical error committed by the seventh grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang in the School Year 2019/2020 in their speaking performance?. Based on the problems stated above, the objectives of the study were as follows: (1) To find out the types of grammatical error committed by the seventh grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang in the School Year 2019/2020 in their speaking performance. (2) To find out the most common grammatical error committed by the seventh grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang in the School Year 2019/2020 in their speaking performance. The subjects of this study are the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang. The sample of this study was 11 students. The method applied in this study was descriptive method and the instrument used was speaking task. The writer used surface strategy taxonomy to analyze the data, consisting of omission, addition, misformation and misordering. The result of this analysis showed that the errors committed by the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 were misformation 8 (36.36%), addition 6 (27.27%), omission 6 (27.27%), misordering 2 (9.09%). The most frequent error was misformation 8 (36.36%). (1) Therefore this study suggests that (1) The students should pay more attention in learning grammar especially in grammatical aspects that related to preposition, verb, article, and noun. (2)The teacher should give the students more practice to help students improve their grammar.
