Abstract

It was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) What types of grammatical errors are committed by the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Kupang? (2) What is the most common grammatical error committed by the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Kupang in writing discussion text? Based on the problems stated above, the objectives of the study were as follows: (1) To find out the grammatical errors in writing discussion text made by the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Kupang.. (2) To find out the most common grammatical error committed by the twerlfth grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Kupang in writing discussion text. The subjects of this study are the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Kupang. The sample of this study was 20 students. The method applied in this study was descriptive method and the instrument used was writing task. The writer used surface taxonomy to analyze the data, consisting of omission, addition, misformation and misordering. The result of this analysis showed that the errors committed by the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 were misformation 49 (59.8%), omission 13 (15.8%), addition 11(13.4), misordering 9 (10.6%). The most frequent error were misformation. From those result the writer suggests to the teachers that they have to teach their students how to write a good text, to the students they have to learn how to write a good text and to the other researchers have to put the interpretation to their studies.
