Abstract

It was conducted to answer the following questions; (1) Are the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang able to write a descriptive text? (2) What is the ability level of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in writing descriptive text?. The method used in this study was descriptive research. The aim of this method is to give information or explain a situation which is observed while the research is done. The subject of the study was the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang (Class X IPA 1). The total number of the students of class IPA 1 was 35 but the writer chose 20 students randomly as the sample of this study. The instrument used in this study was writing test (Write a descriptive text). The collected data were analyzed on the four aspects of writing, namely; grammar, vocabulary, mechanics, and form. The result of this study shows that the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang are able to write descriptive text. The ability level of the students in writing descriptive text classified as “GOOD” (14.3). There is no student who gets the highest score 21-24 (Excellent). There are 2 students (10%) who get the score 17-20 (Very good). There are 14 students (70%) who get the score 13-16 (Good). There are 4 students (20%) who get the score 9-12 (Average). There is no student who gets the score 5-8 (Bellow average) and 1-4 (Bad). The scores were given by using the analytic method proposed by John Anderson. The students made many errors in grammar and word order. Besides that, the writer found that the students could not organize their writing well and occasionally used inappropriate words in their writing. The students also made many errors in spelling and punctuation. Therefore the writer suggested the students to improve their ability in writing, especially in the aspects of grammar, vocabulary, mechanics, and form. The English teacher of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang was suggested to give the students more practice in writing in order to improve the students’ writing ability.
