Abstract

This inriset aims to obtain a description of the learning barriers experienced by students in algebraic fraction operation material. This inriset used a qualitative research method with a hermeneutic phenomenological approach. The subjects in this inriset were the seventh grade students of SMP Katolik Nirmala Jopu consisting of 3 students with high, medium and low math abilities. The instrument in this inriset used the Respondent Ability Test (TKR) and interviews to determine learning barriers experienced by students in algebraic fraction operations. Data analysis techniques in the inriset were phenomenological and hermeneutic data analysis. The results of this inriset indicate that subjects who have high mathematical abilities do not experience ontogeny or epistemological obstacles at all. Subjects with moderate mathematical ability have inconsistencies in solving problems, errors in the algorithm for solving the algebraic form of operations, misconceptions in prerequisite material, limited understanding of concepts. Meanwhile, subjects with low math abilities experience misconceptions on prerequisite material, limited understanding and conceptual mastery. Based on the analysis of the findings and discussion, it can be concluded that students who have high mathematical abilities do not experience any learning barriers. Students who have mathematical abilities are experiencing learning barriers in the form of obstacle epistemology which is instrumental and conceptual in nature. Meanwhile, students with low mathematical abilities experience learning barriers in the form of psychological ontogenic obstacles, conceptual ontogenic obstacles, instrumental ontogenic obstacles, and epistemological obstacles.
