Abstract

It was conducted to answer the following questions. (1) What are the types of grammatical errors in narrative text writing committed by the eleventh grade students in Kupang? (2) What is the most common grammatical error in narrative text writing committed by the eleventh grade students in Kupang? Based on the statement above, the objectives of the study were the following:(1) To find out the types of errors in narrative text writing committed by the eleventh grade students in Kupang. (2) To find out the most common grammatical error in narrative text writing committed by the eleventh grade students in Kupang. The subject of the study in this research was the eleventh grade students of SMKN 3, Kupang. The method applied in this study was descriptive method and the instrument used was writing task. he students were given chance to write narrative text based on their own topics. The taxonomy used by writer in analyzing the data was surface strategy taxonomy, consisting of omission, addition, misformation and misordering. The result of the analysis showed that the errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMKN 3 in Kupang were 104 (74.28%) misformation, 8 (5.71%) addition, 19 (13.57%) omission, and 9 (6.42%) misordering. The total number of errors was 140. The most grammatical error made by students was misformation. Based on the result of this study, the following are the suggestions : (1) For the Teacher: the teacher should teach the students how to write a good text especially in writing narrative text and give the students chance to practise. The teachers should give and pay more attention through comprehension about narrative text, how to write narrative text by using the elements such as; simple past tense (verb, to be and time signal). The teachers must be the tutor for the students by guiding them to write, making correction then evaluation. (2) For the Students: the students should learn more how to write a good text and focus on grammar especially tenses and Subject Agreement. Do more practice in writing in order to increase the skills of writing itself.
