Abstract

This study aims to describe the profile of students' mathematical abilities in solving rectangular problems. The research was conducted at SMPN 3 Amarasi Barat with the research subject consisting of three students, namely students with high math abilities, students with moderate math abilities and students with low math abilities. In determining the profile of students' mathematical abilities, the researcher uses four Polya steps, namely: understanding the problem, making a problem-solving plan, implementing a problem-solving plan, and re-examining the results that have been obtained. This research is descriptive qualitative research. Data retrieval is done through the provision of mathematical problem solving tests (TPM) and interviews after the subject completes the TPM. To test the credibility of the data, time triangulation was carried out. Data analysis was carried out in three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation and data inference. The results showed that subjects with high mathematical abilities could perform the four stages of the mathematical problem solving test process, namely the stage of understanding the problem, making a problem-solving plan, implementing a problem-solving plan and re-examining the results. Subjects with moderate mathematical ability can only pass three stages of the mathematical problem solving test process, namely the stage of understanding the problem, making a problem-solving plan, and implementing a problem-solving plan. Meanwhile, subjects with low mathematical abilities can only pass the stage of understanding the problem and making a problem-solving plan.
