Abstract

This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Aesesa Satap in the school year 2019/2020 able to use simple present tense in sentences? (2) What is the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Aesesa Satap in the school year 2019/2020 in using simple present tense in sentenses? The objectives of the study are the following: (1) to find out whether or not the eighth grade the students of SMP Negeri 2 Aesesa Satap in the school year 2019/2020 are able to use simple present tense in sentences. (2) To find out the level of students ability of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Aesesa Satap in the school year 2019/2020 in using simple present tense in sentences. Method used in this study was a descriptive method. The instrument that the writer used for gathering the data was the test. The total respondents were 20 students. The result of analysis indicates that the: 1 eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Aesesa Satap in the school year 2019/2020 are able in using simple present tense in multiple choice. 2 The ability level of eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Aesesa Satap in the school year 2019/2020 was “Average” (6.15). Their level of ability are as follows: Nine (45%) students got faily good level of ability ranging from 6.6 – 7.5. Seven (35%) students got average level of ability ranging from 5.6 – 6.5. Five (25%) students got average level of ability ranging from 5.6 – 6.5. One (5%) student got below average level of ability ranging from 4.6 – 5.5. One student (5%) poor level of ability ranging from 3.5 – 4.5. One (5%) student got very poor level of ability ranging from 2.6- 3.5. One (5%) student got bad level of ability ranging from 1.6- 2.5. The average ability of students is “Average” (66.2%). The difficulties faced by the students in using simple present tense are the interrogative sentences. Based on the result, the writer would like to suggest: firstly, the English teacher should give more attention to students’ vocabulary in using simple present tense especially constructing interrogative sentences, or other appropriate techniques or methods. Remedial teaching is necessary in order to make the students understand better interrogative sentences.Secondly, students should study more simple present tense and how to answer questions.
